Smatterings Somewhat Related to Religion

As part of the scatterback of the fine fuckery that has enveloped the family for a few months, I was slumming today and caught a movie on HBO, ‘The Last Supper.’ The premise is, um, almost irrestitible.

A group of five graduate student roommates in Iowa fall into a descent that leads to murder after an accidental meeting leads them to search out extremists in the local community…

Ever wonder why Jehovah’s Witnesses don’t vote? I had a friend throughout junior high and high school who was (and probably still is) Jehovah’s Witness. If this was something I knew, I’d certainly forgotten. Before reading the information piece from Slate I somehow knew the biblical verse “they aren’t of this world” (John 17:14-19) would be pertinent.

(In some of the sect’s literature, members are described as “representatives of God’s heavenly kingdom“; they are thus obligated to stay out of local political affairs in keeping with the behavior of ambassadors.) Witnesses also refrain from serving in the military, running for public office, and pledging allegiance to the flag.

Within the same article is reference to the Old Order Amish. When I was in Ohio finishing up college there was a big push to get the Amish there to vote ….. Bush – abortion & gay marriage. There wasn’t much in the presidential race of 2000, but it was heavily pushed in Wayne & Holmes counties for the 2004 presidential election.

Kraybill and Kopko note that the Amish community’s showing at the polls in 2004 may have been a onetime event, spurred in part by issues of interest to the Amish such as abortion rights and gay marriage.

Beiler also believes that 2008 won’t witness such extensive GOP popularity among the Amish.

Because the Republican Party is identified more with the war in Iraq during this election cycle, Beiler said Amish support will be harder to win and could wane.

Which is what I NEVER understood. Why would the Amish (or anyone for that matter who claimed ‘Christianity’ as the basis for their spirituality) vote for anyone who promoted war and militarism the way the Bushites have done? Because the Amish in this ’situation’ were (are) no different than anyone else of the American public. They were “fed” what was necessary to get the “proper votes.”

Reading this was an actual laugh out loud moment, surprisingly gleeful at that. All over a goddamned movie prop – basically. Fucking wankers . . .

“Ms. Swindell and I both work for small non-profit organizations and thus have limited means,” Fischer said. “The city of Boise, on the other hand, has an annual budget of $479 million, and thus is certainly in a position to waive this judgment.

That entire fiasco began with Fred Phelps from Kansas City – God Hates Fag fame, NOT the Brandi & Bryan sideshow.  They jumped on that misguided circus bandwagon thinking, apparently, that they’d both get jobs as ringleaders.

And, in the event we need any reminders about what a theocracy will look like, here’s a dose:

And I think to round it all up and in keeping with the 10 commandment theme, we need the parlance of a recently deceased comedian whose thoughtful succinctness is just beautiful
