Tidbits on mining…..

Bob Murray, owner of the company who owns the mine in Utah, summoned reporters and took them ‘deep underground’ to show them what he’s doing to save his miners. CNN had this video. KSL in SLC, Utah has their take on Bob Murray….hmmm – he’s jus’ emotional. Here’s an article from the Idaho Statesman, a McClatchy newspaper by-the-way.

“At one point during a meeting at a school earlier Wednesday with the miners’ families, Murray stepped outside, paced around and went back in.

Maria Buenrostro, the sister of trapped miner Manuel Sanchez, said Murray got angry with relatives’ questions and walked out. She also said there was no interpreter for three Spanish-speaking families.”

A bit on the scrutiny of the legislation (M.I.N.E.R.) passed following the Sago Mine disaster in Virginia.

“Heralded as the most significant mining legislation in 30 years, the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act, signed into law by President Bush on June 15, 2006, was a result of investigations into the Sago accident.”

And, as always – WSWS has their take. And here is some ‘background’ on the dangers of mining in Utah.

And for a different take on mining from Deutschland where legislation has been agreed upon to phase out coal mining.

“Though the basics of the plan were agreed on in February (more…), Social and Christian Democratic ministers wrangled over the final wording of the legislation, which will now head to the lower and upper houses of parliament for expected approval in the coming months.”
