By now – most have heard or read about the British teacher, Gillian Gibbons, now in Sudan, who allowed her 7-year-old students to name a teddy bear, Mohammed. She was “charged on Wednesday with insulting Islam, inciting hatred and showing contempt for religious beliefs . . . .”
THIS is what drives me crazy about theocrats, regardless their form of theological basis.
Hundreds of Sudanese Muslims, waving green Islamic flags, took to the streets of Khartoum on Friday demanding death for the British teacher convicted of insulting Islam after her class named a teddy bear Mohammad. “No one lives who insults the Prophet,” the protesters chanted…..after leaving Muslim Friday prayers. .
That was Friday; Sunday – “Omar al-Bashir, the Sudanese president, (has) pardoned a British teacher jailed for 15 days for insulting religion, according to a presidential adviser.”
The same al-Bashir who has overseen the slaughter in Darfur and who, according to al-Jazeera – was approached by:
Sudan’s influential …. Council of Muslim Scholars urged the government not to pardon Gibbons, saying it would damage Khartoum’s reputation with Muslims around the world.
I think al-Bashir is more interested in keeping it close to his ‘allies’ like the Chinese who want his oil and provide him with arms, heavier artillery, and the like. The Chinese aren’t Muslim. Despite the UN embargo, China and Russia are both ‘accused‘ of supporting the rebels and the government of Sudan.
The report, (the group says) is based on eyewitness testimony and “confidential sources,” said Russia and China sold military hardware worth $21 million and $24 million respectively to the African state in 2005, having been aware that “numerous such arms” were being used “in direct attacks against civilians.”
UPDATE: KHARTOUM (Reuters) – The British teacher jailed in Sudan for letting her students name a teddy bear Mohammad won a pardon on Monday and was released into British care.
