My Take – Idaho’s 2nd Congressional District Debate

Our PBS channel, KAID, has the video up of the debate between Mike Simpson (R) and Debbie Holmes (D), 2nd Congressional District.

If the progressive movement is to mean anything in this state, we must not allow Congressman Simpson to pass himself off as a moderate. If we can force him to run on his record, we can win.

Noww, I know how articulate and knowledgeable I am when sitting at the computer or listening at home who when speaking in front of any group (especially while standing) I become an instant idiot without any facts or figures in my head – although the profanities are still quite intact.  These are just my thoughts.

  1. My number one ‘complaint’ – BE More dynamic, more forceful when speaking.  (Simpson just sounds like he knows what he’s talking about because he’s done it for so long.)  Debbie may very well have a tremendous grasp of the issues, however she is coming across as not sure that what she is saying is precisely what she means.
  2. See, the party Mr. Simpson represents has been in power for the past almost 8 years.  It’s the primary reason the economy is in the condition.  I think that should be reiterated, not necessarily that it’s the fault of Mike Simpson – but the failures of not voting for unemployment benefits extension (Simpson was ‘yea’ however), etc.,
  3. Suddenly Simpson is “I think it’s time to bring our troops home…..I’ll say that flat out.”  I don’t care if he sees the light now. Economically, this country is suffering because of this misbegotten war and the party he represents is responsible for spreading the lies, misconceptions, and propaganda, and the current expenditure of $10 billion or so that’s spent on the war.
  4. Get rid of that phrase “no-brainer.”

Strong Points:

  1. Health care issue where she and Simpson were actually debating and it was terminated (time constraints).
  2. Her message: She knows why she is running and states them forcefully.
  3. Nuclear power….. – what!??  It’ll compute to other/those voters who aren’t as fearful of nuclear power.
  4. Public transportation isn’t just a bus system in Boise or the Amtrack train coming thru.

Local transportation:

  1. Bridge gap – who came with this phrase?
  2. I don’t care if gas is inching downward to $3.00/gallon (or even 50¢), public transportation needs to be addressed and expanded, as well as long distance options.

Oh yeah – Republicans you admire – Chuck Hagel; yep, I’d be HARD pressed to come up with anyone.
