Obama to Reverse “Mexico City Policy”!

Just happened across this good news – the day after the 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade.

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama plans to sign an executive order ending the ban on federal funds for international groups that promote or perform abortions, officials told The Associated Press on Friday.

gag-on-reproductive-rightsThe policy bans U.S. taxpayer money, usually in the form of U.S. Agency for International Development funds, from going to international family planning groups that either offer abortions or provide information, counseling or referrals about abortion. It is also known as the “global gag rule,” because it prohibits taxpayer funding for groups that even talk about abortion if there is an unplanned pregnancy.

It’s also known as the “Mexico City policy.”  Some background on the policy itself with a ‘fact sheet‘ supplied by Reuters.  Now interestingly,

“the Democratic official and senior U.S. official who disclosed the plans to The AP did so on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to pre-empt Obama’s announcement.”

So – I’m hoping this particular  ‘Democratic official and senior U.S. official’ is on the mark with this.

  1. Very encouraged by this, but on the other hand the Obama administration’s affirmation of Bu$hCo’s “we’ll wiretap any American anytime we want,” policy was a bitter pill to swallow.

    The good with the bad…

  2. The Jesusistanis are peeing themselves over this. Their headlines read “Obama sends abortion money overseas!” The change in the gag rule does nothing of the sort, of course, but the Jesusistanis can’t be told anything.

  3. Yeah, that wiretap bullshit is worrisome. Carrying on the work of the evil darkness….

The 43rd State Blues had video up interviewing some of those Jesusistanis about jailing women who get abortions. Quite interesting, really. I’m going to put it up as well becuase I want to link to another blog who also had it. The ‘author’ is a former evangelical.
