Marc Ambinder at the political outlet of The Atlantic has it that President Obama selected “Edward Hugler, currently the deputy assistant secretary for administration, has spent more than 30 years in a variety of functions in the department” until Solis’ nomination goes through.
Apparently it’s not just her support of labor unions or being pro-worker. It’s that she was ‘treasurer’ of American Rights at Work that is mightily supportive of the Employee Free Choice Act.
Once again – the mission statement of the Office of Labor for the U.S. government.
The Department of Labor fosters and promotes the welfare of the job seekers, wage earners, and retirees of the United States by improving their working conditions, advancing their opportunities for profitable employment, protecting their retirement and health care benefits, helping employers find workers, strengthening free collective bargaining, and tracking changes in employment, prices, and other national economic measurements. In carrying out this mission, the Department administers a variety of Federal labor laws including those that guarantee workers’ rights to safe and healthful working conditions; a minimum hourly wage and overtime pay; freedom from employment discrimination; unemployment insurance; and other income support.
Perhaps those holding up Ms Solis’ nomination should read that, perhaps a few times until they understand it’s not about their jobs (per se), but the American worker, and that President Obama has chosen a champion of the American worker and, as such, she should be given that job – forthwith.
