Video from the LA-Times of President Obama’s nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court – Sonia Sotomayor.
Sonia’s tribute to her mother is at the 13:00 mark. Tear-invoking.
One of my favorite sources when it comes to ‘The Law’ is Christy Hardin Smith at firedoglake. She was up early this morning. Jack Balkin at Balkinization; he’s weighing in on Judge Sotomayor. Glenn Greenwald at Salon.com, he’ s on it. And so is Jeralyn (Merritt) at Talk Left who was live-blogging during the announcement, adding her invaluable comments, as is one of her contributors – Big Tent Democrat (aka Armando Llorens). BTD caught Jonathan Turley’s “base racism.” Apparently there’s some claim Judge Sonia Sotomayor doesn’t have the intellectual firepower to rein in Scalia’s dominance. Oh Geezus! And we’re OFF!
A few updates from Talk Left:
Update: Reactions: Jeff Toobin on CNN says the setting (Biden, Obama and Sotomayor) was striking: it is the face of the New America. Suzanne Malveaux says there wasn’t a dry eye in the audience when she talked about her family.
Update: Toobin said she has no death penalty experience because New York has no death penalty. But, I don’t think that’s accurate. The feds have the death penalty, even in New York. Here’s one ruling she made in 1999 — allowing a death case against a leader of the Latin Kings gang to proceed. Update: A New York Times article from 1999 on her confirmation hearing to the Second Circuit. Among the fears of Republicans: Clinton would nominate her to the Supreme Court
