Scruffy McSnufflepuss & The Cockroach King

Someone pointed me to John Cole’s writing on the “birfers” running their oblique racist attack on President Obama.  What makes it even more priceless are the comments.  You have to admit that Ms or Mr Scruffy McSnufflepus, indeed, has impeccable logic.

Scruffy McSnufflepuss says:

He claims he’s from Hawaii, a “state” whose existence I have every reason to doubt.  I’ve never been there.  The photographs supposedly taken there make it look like Heaven, another place whose existence there is no reason to believe in. Photographs are easily doctored.  And yes, many people say they’ve been to Hawaii, and my brother claims he lives there; but many people are liars, especially my brother.

Until I’ve seen Hawaii with my own eyes, I see no reason why I should accept that there is such a place.  In fact, having never seen Obama with my own eyes, why should I believe in his existence, either? “Obama,” like the fictional archipelago of Hawaii, is- very likely- a plot by Muslim extremists to destroy America.  In fact, the evidence of that is a lot stronger than the evidence for Obama and this fantasy Hawaii/Heaven place.

Aside from all the tongue-in-cheek, hilarious comebacks and remarks, one commenter broke it down even sharper:

Commenter Eric K summarizes the birther issue perfectly:

“50 years ago you shouted nigger, 30 years ago you talked about States Rights, now you ask to see the president’s birth certificate.”Update. Here’s the quote (from Lee Atwater) that refers to

You start out in 1954 by saying, “Nigger, nigger, nigger.” By 1968 you can’t say “nigger”—that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states’ rights and all that stuff. You’re getting so abstract now [that] you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites.

The Cockroach King – Glen Beck – is leading that charge….. the latest from him.

It’s always telling when the kettle is calling out the pot.

Blog Stuff

broken_laptopOh Yippee!  I finally have enough disposable income to fix my laptop.  Now I can get back to blogging more often, more regularly.

I have my old HP tower which given its age is still quite the work horse.  It’s only a Pentium 3 …. it’s a plodding work horse.  Now there’s the computer from work place that I also have at home  – it’s about a year old and that is to be used just for work, and given the connection I have, it’s instanteous, so it’s been known to fill in at times.

I’m psyched….

So Who’s Telling the Truth?

An interesting story of possible sexual harassment.  Or – is it something else?

In a letter to the paper’s editor, Cmdr. Jeffrey Gordon accused Carol Rosenberg of “multiple incidents of abusive and degrading comments of an explicitly sexual nature.”   Gordon, who deals primarily with the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, prison, said in the letter that this was a “formal sexual harassment complaint” and asked the Herald for a “thorough investigation.”

“Her behavior has been so atrocious over the years,” Gordon said in an interview.   “I’ve been abused worse than the detainees have been abused.”

Worse than the detainees?  Really?  That’s quite the claim, Commander.

One friend, Los Angeles Times reporter Carol Williams, dismissed the letter, saying, “This is an attempt to discredit a journalist who has managed to transcend incredible odds to cover a story of tremendous significance to the American public.”

They’re trying to sort it out.  Have to keep track of this one.

Being Black in Oregon; Local Patriots Looking Out

Just a couple of things that caught my attention this evening.

Dan Petegrosky at Blue Oregon brought up the report published by the Portland Urban League on ‘the social & economic condition of African Americans in Oregon.”  The report was launched this morning in Portland.

It reviews the status of Black Oregonians in areas such as education, employment, housing, health, criminal justice and child welfare. The report reveals a persistent gap in the living standards between black and white Oregonians, which is growing wider as a result of the economic downturn.

The blog started by the Portland Urban League references two articles: The State of Black Oregon and an editorial written by Nikole Hannah-Jones with both articles sparking up ricocheting comments, along with the apparent prerequisite racist ones.

One of the more interesting comments was at Blue Oregon by ScubaDew, part of which is below:

I think it’s worth mentioning that, even though our state constitution was drafted with a amendment specifically forbidding slavery, it used to be literally illegal for blacks to live in Oregon.

Like most racism in America, people tried to justify this by couching it in economic terms. Oregon farmers claimed they were afraid that rich plantation owners would come with an army of black slaves or cheap black laborers, which they thought would edge out more “modest” family farmers who couldn’t afford such labor.

The other is a post from Tara on a weekend happening in Twin Falls involving a group – TEARS of the Patriots – focusing on the Constitution, presumably the U.S. Constitution, along with some local letter writers who were all about alerting those reading the Magic Valley News to the need to “Educate ourselves on Constitution Day.”  That’s all fine and dandy, but that very first letter had me flummoxed early on.
And I quote from that ‘Educate ourselves on Constitution Day’ letter to the editor.
I was taught a long time ago that the Constitution does not give us our rights but protects them. These rights have been determined by God and nature and no written law can change this.
Am I missing something?  The Constitution doesn’t give us rights only protects them.  And, apparently the only dispenser of those rights are God & nature.   However no written law can change ‘God-given and apparent natural rights.  I’m sorry – isn’t the Constitution all about ‘the law and isn’t it, like, written down?’  It seems to me those two sentences don’t even BELONG together or anywhere near each other.  And for Chris’sakes, that shit gets blown right out the window if one doesn’t believe in “God” doncha think?

More later when I untangle my brainwaves…..

Do You Know These People?

Found this at ‘Fran I Am‘ who found it somewheres.

Minnick & Simpson to Oppose Health Care Bill

At firedoglake, nyceve relates an encounter she had with a young woman at a business she has frequented for years, and that I’ve heard all too often.   In fact, it’s a decision my own daughter and her small family have had to make.   Nyceve’s post opens up discussion with author,  John Geyman, M.D., and discussion of his book. john-geyman-do-not-resuscitate.thumbnail.jpg

Do Not Resuscitate: Why the Health Insurance Industry is Dying, and How We Must Replace It

This time, I asked her whether she thought President Obama would deliver meaningful healthcare reform? She replied, without missing a beat, “he damn well better!”

“You insured?” I asked.

“I could be.” She said.

“Do they offer it here?” As you might imagine,  I pressed for details.

“Of course they do, but I can’t afford it. I have to choose, insurance or the rent.”

In the meantime – Mike, Walt – give up your taxpayer-paid health care until those who cannot afford it have theirs, and those going bankrupt paying medical bills are free of that burden.

BOISE — Idaho’s two U.S. House members are joining the opposition forming against legislation designed to reform the nation’s health care system.

And, being a Blue Dog Democrat doesn’t mean shit in my book.  Katrina Vanden Huevel describes ‘Blue Dog Democrats’ as “corporate democrats.”

Anything to keep the status quo just that.

So Now the Question is Desertion?

bringbowehomeIn the few days since the news about Bowe Bergdahl being taken hostage by the Taliban in Afghanistan, an apparent shitstorm has hit the major wingnutters with a few holdouts for ‘calm.’

Here’s a bit from ABC News:

Lt. Col. Patrick Ryder, a Pentagon spokesman, said that “the efforts continue to locate the soldier, but we’re not going to provide any details.”  The Pentagon yesterday announced that it took two days to determine that Bergdahl had been captured by enemy forces.

Officials at the Pentagon said they still believe Bergdahl is in Afghanistan.

Bergdahl was taken by Mullah Sangeen’s men from village near the U.S. military post in Paktika, where he was stationed, according to a senior Afghan Army official in the province. The captors “punched and hit the soldier after some resistance.  But than they were able to take the soldier and left all of his things: weapon, body armored and radios.”  The Afghan official says Bergdahl and the three Afghan National Army soldiers were moved from the near-by village and quickly vanished.

I was pretty disappointed and disgusted yesterday.   I have relatively little respect as it is for the likes of Michelle Malkin, Matt Drudge, Bill O’Reilly – anyone at Fox News – Glenn Beck, Lou Dobbs, et al.  I’m not even sure how to describe them without adding ‘fucking’ or ‘idiotic.’  I rarely watch or read because I only have so much energy to expend on fighting their determined ignorance.

I ran across this at Crooks & Liars,  someone named Ralph Peters. Continue reading
