So Now the Question is Desertion?

bringbowehomeIn the few days since the news about Bowe Bergdahl being taken hostage by the Taliban in Afghanistan, an apparent shitstorm has hit the major wingnutters with a few holdouts for ‘calm.’

Here’s a bit from ABC News:

Lt. Col. Patrick Ryder, a Pentagon spokesman, said that “the efforts continue to locate the soldier, but we’re not going to provide any details.”  The Pentagon yesterday announced that it took two days to determine that Bergdahl had been captured by enemy forces.

Officials at the Pentagon said they still believe Bergdahl is in Afghanistan.

Bergdahl was taken by Mullah Sangeen’s men from village near the U.S. military post in Paktika, where he was stationed, according to a senior Afghan Army official in the province. The captors “punched and hit the soldier after some resistance.  But than they were able to take the soldier and left all of his things: weapon, body armored and radios.”  The Afghan official says Bergdahl and the three Afghan National Army soldiers were moved from the near-by village and quickly vanished.

I was pretty disappointed and disgusted yesterday.   I have relatively little respect as it is for the likes of Michelle Malkin, Matt Drudge, Bill O’Reilly – anyone at Fox News – Glenn Beck, Lou Dobbs, et al.  I’m not even sure how to describe them without adding ‘fucking’ or ‘idiotic.’  I rarely watch or read because I only have so much energy to expend on fighting their determined ignorance.

I ran across this at Crooks & Liars,  someone named Ralph Peters.

He was prattling on (almost spitting up as he spoke) about how this soldier might be a deserter and if that was the case–he should be executed by the Taliban. Yea, real sane analysis by Peters.

And I’m thinking – where and when did this come up?  So using ‘The Google’ I found part of the answer; Michelle Malkin, the Free Republic – Nuttersville.  As I’m writing this, I can’t get into this particular post (below) without this huge message – of course, it’ll probably be gone by the time anyone gets around to reading it.  It just reads “Database Error – Error Establishing a Connection” in large, solid, black block print.

Questions about the reported abduction of Pfc. Bowe Bergdahl; Update: Reports of desertion mounting

So now there’s this question of Bowe Bergdahl being a deserter.  Why?  Because he’s been missing for a couple of weeks and the Pentagon has just now confirmed it is he who the Taliban is holding in Afghanistan.  My understanding is that his parents and others (including our governor) have known for some time (since June 30th)  and have kept quiet.   I could be wrong about that small ‘fact.’

There’s also conflicting reports as cited in The Oregonian I’ve read elsewhere on Reuters, the AP, and McClathey (D.C.), Idaho Statesman.

The circumstances of Bergdahl’s capture on June 30 are not clear.  On July 2, two U.S. officials told The Associated Press the soldier had “just walked off” his base with three Afghans after his shift.  The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the record.

The Army said in a news release Saturday that Bergdahl was declared “DUSTWUN” — Duty Status: Whereabouts Unknown — “when he failed to report for a 100 percent accountability muster June 30.”  The Army said he was last seen when he was released from guard duty.

On Monday, P.J. Tobia, an independent journalist blogging from Afghanistan, quoted unnamed sources saying that Bergdahl had left a note behind saying he was “going to mountains to find himself.”  On Fox News Channel, retired Army Lt. Col. Ralph Peters described the soldier as a deserter.

The military has released no further information, and The Oregonian could not verify the claims.

Here’s P.J. Tobia’s blog post.   I don’t know, I’m not real impressed . . . .  it would appear the numbnutters are the only one doing the asking.

At Malkin’s site this morning, many of the commenters were saying to slow down and withhold judgment until Bowe is safe – either released or rescued.  And from Jawa Report -another call to wait until our young hostage is released and home.  Even there, however, there were a couple of interesting highlights that had me shaking my head:

I‘m told by a friend that Islamists are having a field day over at a certain well known forum contrasting how well Bergdahl is being treated by the Taliban with how poorly the US treats its POWs captured in the War on Terror.

Desertion, itself, may also be a lapse of judgment. If there is any veracity to the rumor that Bergdahl wanted to go “to the mountains to find himself” ……

Really? What’s the forum?  I don’t get why he (or she) didn’t cite it.

Even though I have this tiny blog and mostly write for my sanity, I don’t put out something that I can’t back up with some kind of link.  If it’s a rumor – it’s just that, a rumor.  When it’s fact or something I can verify to some degree, then that’s another thing.  Otherwise – good call here.

So, let’s reserve judgment on Bergdahl for now. He’s an American soldier being held hostage by our enemies in a hot war.

As a final thought, I would think the primary reason the Bergdahls want their privacy respected is because of the obvious onslaught of media that will be inundating Hailey to “report” which includes talking to Bowe’s parents and enquiring as to how they feel.  As a parent, I can only imagine how they must feel.
