Been keeping track of the four police officers killed in Tacoma (Lakewood) this morning.
The man who is reported to be the shooter and just “a person of interest” is a Maurice Clemmons.
But the most disturbing information thus far about this case:
Clemmons was paroled by Gov Mike Huckabee (R) in 2000
___ Maurice Clemmons received a 35-year sentence in the early 1990s for armed robbery and theft. His sentence was commuted in May 2000, and he was let out three months later.
___ The following March, Clemmons committed two armed robberies and other crimes and was sentenced to 10 years. You’d think they’d keep him locked up after that, but no: He was paroled last March and is now wanted for aggravated robbery and I suppose a few questions about this case as well.
The story is picking up ….. Huffington Post, Politico, Marc Arbinder at ‘The Atlantic’ to name a few are moving in on Huckabee’s role in Clemmons’ pardon. It seems Huckabee was also involved in the parole of convicted rapist Wayne DuMond. DuMond was accused of rape and murder after being released but died in prison before standing trial.
The Kansas City Star is just one of those calling this Huckabee’s “Willie Horton moment.” And as GottaLaff at The Political Carnival brought up earlier today, Huckabee isn’t so sure he wants to run in 2012. He’s got that gig on FOX, ya know.
Now – that would be a damned shame, wouldn’t it? More tomorrow.
If interested, here’s Huckabee’s statement regarding the murdered police officers in Lakewood. The mid-portion appears below.
“…… Should he be found to be responsible for this horrible tragedy, it will be the result of a series of failures in the criminal justice system in both Arkansas and Washington State. He was recommended for and received a commutation of his original sentence from 1990, this commutation made him parole eligible and he was then paroled by the parole board once they determined he met the conditions at that time. He was arrested later for parole violation and taken back to prison to serve his full term, but prosecutors dropped the charges that would have held him. It appears that he has continued to have a string of criminal and psychotic behavior but was not kept incarcerated by either state…..”
Update: 10:25 p.m.
A Tweet just came in that a suspect is ‘cornered’ in Seattle, Washington.
SWAT officers have surrounded a home in the Leschi neighborhood and are looking for the person of interest sought in connection with this morning’s shooting in Parkland , in which four Lakewood police officers were killed.
This as well:
Seattle police spokesman Sean Whitcomb would only say the SWAT call out “may be” related to the murder of four officers in Parkland this morning. However, it appears the registered owner of the home is related to the person of interest in the shooting, Maurice Clemmons, and police are definitely looking for someone matching his description.
Coincidentally, the goings on are one block from where the Seattle police officers were ambushed Oct. 31st with one being killed and the other injured.
Similar update from King 5 in Seattle:
PARKLAND, Wash. – Seattle police cordoned off a section of Seattle’s Leschi neighborhood Sunday night, believing they had located the person of interest in the shooting deaths of four Lakewood, Wash. police officers.
Police cruisers surrounded streets in the neighborhood of 30th Avenue and Yesler Way in the search for Maurice Clemmons.
