Westboro Baptist Church

A few days ago this tweet came through from someone I follow who lives in the Spokane, Coeur d’ Alene area.

“!OMG #WestboroBabtistChurch will be protesting @ colleges & high schools Oct 21 in Spokane, & Oct 22 in Coeur d’alene ID AWFUL group.”

Protesting at colleges and high schools.  What the fuck for you might ask?

So here we go.  First they’ll be in Spokane (the 21st) and then in Coeur d’ Alene the following day.  The targets are colleges, universities, and high schools in Spokane – some of which can be considered private property – say like Gonzaga & Whitworth College; others aren’t so lucky as with the public schools.  Here’s a list of who and the alleged why and, no – the whys make little if any sense.

≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠≠

Gonzaga: “These college students spend more time pursuing their drunken sins than their academic studies.”

Moody Bible Institute: “…preach some truth to these so-called future ministers of the Word who in reality are just false prophets.”

Whitworth College: “..remind them that this current generation of young adults were raised to serve their lusts rather than their Lord.”

The North Idaho College is planning a candlelight vigil.  Their Theater Dept is being targeted as their Theatre Department’s has an upcoming production of ‘The Laramie Project’ later this month.  This is indeed, nice.  However, I’m kinda partial to the reaction the Synagogue Chavurat HaMashiach in Spokane plans on giving these idiots and, who, by the way, has quite an interesting mission on their website.

Rabbi Reuel Dillion is not sure why Westboro is targeting his small synagogue. He thinks they must have searched the Internet and found them at random. But he’s concerned this type of hateful message is popping up more and more. He says it’s definitely hate speech. He says we obviously have free speech in this country and it’s one of the things that makes this country great. But he thinks there are better ways to go about these things.

Rabbi Dillon plans to ignore the group.

Sounds like a plan.
