What the Gov’t Shutdown is REALLY About

This has been my conclusion from early on and over the past few days the twitterverse has been abuzz with it as well.  Today it’s a raging bonfire of consensus.  An example:

AndrewKroll RT @CitizenRick: Yep. #Absurd RT @jaketapper: Bottom line: this is a standoff over 0.17% of the budget and funding for Planned Parenthood.

And don’t tell me this isn’t about controlling women’s reproductive choices or women – period. Because it SO is.

These fucking assholes don’t give a shit about what transpires following birth and beyond. However that conglomeration of cells that grows into a fetus has super-priority.  Of course may just pertain to white babies, that is, until they need the babies of color for news props.

BREAKING: Dems offered a “clean” bill to avert govt. shutdown and Repubs have rejected it because the bill doesn’t cut EPA & women’s rights. about 18 hours ago via web

Talking Points Memo has the scoop on ‘No Deal!’ and there’s this incredible comment:

theCleverBulldog 1 hour ago
We are 1600 billion in deficit this year alone, yet democrats insist on giving 500 million tax dollars to a private organization so they can kill babies. Truly amazing.
$500 million tax dollars . . . .
Oh, of course.

Victim of Domestic Terrorism – Dr. Tiller

Democratic Underground’s news page had the breaking news of Dr. George Tiller’s murder in Wichita, Kansas – while at church nonetheless  – early Sunday.  I saw it online almost immediately.  However being at work there was not a way to catch cable news like I wanted to see what, if anything, was transpiring.  For some reason I was stunned that it would occur in church.  However when someone apparently is deluded into thinking they are eliminating ‘evil’ – nothing is sacred even to those so-called ‘pro-lifers.’

divider_chopped_treeThinking there may be ‘a logical explanation’ I wondered what could be going on that would bring this assassination about now – why now?  What could have played a role in this happening now.   I found a couple of interesting happenings in the past few months that might provide something.

Jurors Acquit Kansas Doctor in a Late-Term Abortion Case

After years of investigations and four days of testimony, jurors here took just 45 minutes on Friday to acquit a controversial abortion doctor of charges that he performed 19 illegal late-term abortions in 2003. Kansas law permits late-term abortions when two independent doctors agree that the pregnant woman would be irreparably harmed by giving birth.

Dr. Tiller’s clinic is one of three in the United States that perform late-term abortions, and he has been reviled by anti-abortion forces for decades.

Then there was this – shortly before coming Secretary of Health & Human Services…

TOPEKA, Kan. – Gov. Kathleen Sebelius vetoed a bill Thursday that would have rewritten Kansas’ restrictions on late-term abortions, perhaps complicating her effort to win confirmation as U. S. health and human services secretary.

Sebelius questioned whether the bill was constitutional and suggested it would cause “intimidation” of doctors.

Just try as they might to define the women who seek abortions, the so-called ‘right-to-lifers’ – outside of being nothing of the sort – allow for no exceptions, regardless of the circumstances. They just so want to interject themselves into other’s lives and other’s decisions as being their “God-given right” based upon their religious beliefs.  It is not so and it is not their place.

And you just knew these jackasses would show up sooner more so than later.

8:17 PM CDT, May 31, 2009

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — About 10 anti-abortion protesters gathered across the street from a downtown Wichita vigil where supporters of George Tiller remembered the slain abortion provider.

The protesters outside Sunday’s vigil were from Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, which also pickets military funerals. The protesters held signs emblazoned with such messages as “Abortion is bloody murder” and “Baby killer in hell.”

The protesters and about 20 Tiller supporters shouted at each other. A large number of police officers stood by to make sure the scene stayed under control.

There was this screen catch of the headline at Huffington Post when Attorney General issued an order of protection using the service of the U.S. marshals sometime later at Huffington.

A few interesting reads with some wall-to-wall coverage from the Kansas City Fox News channel.

  • Kansas City Fox News – ‘Complete Coverage
  • Daily Kos:  Roeder = Domestic Terrorist
  • NY Times:  Dr. Tiller Shot in 1994;   Recent Acquittal of Dr. Tiller;
  • Militia Watchdog – Anti-Defamation League:  Recounts Right Wing Extremism specifically related to Scott Roeder (July 7, 1997): “July 7,  Kansas: Scott Roeder is sentenced to sixteen months in state prison for parole violations following a 1996 conviction for having bomb components in his car trunk. Roeder, a sovereign citizen and tax protester, violated his parole by not filing tax returns or providing his social security number to his employer.”  What a guy.

Getting up observations from yesterday on the murder of Dr. George Tiller in Wichita, KS.

In the meantime – check this shit out. Front page of Huffington Post.

Attorney General Directs US Marshals To Protect Abortion Clinics

***UPDATE*** US Attorney General Eric Holder is dispatching US Marshals to protect abortion clinic and doctors around the country.

Holder issued the following statement:

The murder of Doctor George Tiller is an abhorrent act of violence, and his family is in our thoughts and prayers at this tragic moment.  Federal law enforcement is coordinating with local law enforcement officials in Kansas on the investigation of this crime, and I have directed the United States Marshals Service to offer protection to other appropriate people and facilities around the nation.  The Department of Justice will work to bring the perpetrator of this crime to justice.  As a precautionary measure, we will also take appropriate steps to help prevent any related acts of violence from occurring.

Obama to Reverse “Mexico City Policy”!

Just happened across this good news – the day after the 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade.

updated: Fri., Jan. 23, 2009

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama plans to sign an executive order ending the ban on federal funds for international groups that promote or perform abortions, officials told The Associated Press on Friday.

gag-on-reproductive-rightsThe policy bans U.S. taxpayer money, usually in the form of U.S. Agency for International Development funds, from going to international family planning groups that either offer abortions or provide information, counseling or referrals about abortion. It is also known as the “global gag rule,” because it prohibits taxpayer funding for groups that even talk about abortion if there is an unplanned pregnancy.

It’s also known as the “Mexico City policy.”  Some background on the policy itself with a ‘fact sheet‘ supplied by Reuters.  Now interestingly,

“the Democratic official and senior U.S. official who disclosed the plans to The AP did so on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to pre-empt Obama’s announcement.”

So – I’m hoping this particular  ‘Democratic official and senior U.S. official’ is on the mark with this.

“Health of the Mother” Scam

Okay – I for one almost stopped watching last night’s debate between Gramps McCain and Obama.  McCain was somewhere between whining and wildly negative, rolling his eyes, and sighing fer crissakes. I think he even snorted at one point.

Finally – finally! Obama started pushing back although I still wasn’t thoroughly impressed or satisfied.  I wanted him to backhand McCain for being such a boorish prick.

Then Bob Scheiffer threw into the mix – abortion. Though I was satisfied with Obama’s response following McCain’s bullying regarding Obama’s record in the Illinois state senate, there was one moment where I became absolutely and totally creeped out, and it was here….. this is the quick shot.

To Be Prolife, Wanting to Vote for Obama?

There was this announcement at the God-o-Meter, a Belief.net blog passing along the addresses of two websites dedicated to being “prolife” and voting for Barack Obama.   One is the Matthew 25 Network; the other is ‘ProLife – ProObama.’  The Matthew 25 Network has an adjunct website: Put Away Falsehood that addresses the various mistruths, lies, deceptions, and rumors aimed at Obama – while quoting from Ephesians:  “Therefore, having put away all falsehood, let each one of us speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are all of the same body.”  (Eph. 4:25)

The Matthew 25 Network is a community of Christians – Catholic, Protestant, Pentecostal, and Evangelical – inspired by the Gospel mandate to put our faith into action to care for our neighbor, especially the most vulnerable..

Therefore, while no elected official will be without flaw, we come together as individuals to support candidates for public office who share the values of the Matthew 25 Network: promoting life with dignity, caring for the least of these, strengthening and supporting families, stewardship of God’s Creation, working for peace and justice at home and abroad, and promoting the common good

Some time ago a gentleman by the name of  Douglas W. Knemic wrote a statement clarifying the reason why he, as a ‘prolife Christian’ would be voting for Obama.  Knemic, it seemed, had been assistant attorney general (Office of Legal Counsel) during Reagan’s and H.W. Bush’s administrations, a professor at Notre Dame & Catholic Univ., as well as endowed chair of constitutional law at Pepperdine University.  (Endowed is quite the honor, BTW).  Mr. Knemic’s statement was published in Feb/March of this year.

However none of that was what irritated the hell out of me. Continue reading

Pharmacists – Friend of the Court Brief Filed

This is about Plan B.

A friend of the court brief (PDF) was filed by Americans for the Separation of Church & State in the U.S. Court of Appeals, 9th Circuit – (on appeal from the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington) [No. CV-07-05374-RBL]

The Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice also filed an amicus curiae brief on March 11, 2008. Their brief is here – also PDF. Their arguments incorporate religious liberty and free will choice

Those regulations require pharmacies to dispense all medications in a timely manner, and preclude pharmacies from turning away a customer who presents a valid prescription to which the pharmacy owner or pharmacist on duty personally objects. The regulations do, however, allow an objecting pharmacist to decline to fill a prescription by, for example, passing it to another on-duty pharmacist to dispense the medication.

The plantiff is ‘Stormans, Inc (Ralph’s Thriftway) ‘ v. Mary Selecky* (*Secretary of the Washington State)

Some background here where the state of Washington, Dept of Health & Welfare dismissed some of the complaints against Ralph’s Thriftway:

The state Board of Pharmacy on Friday dismissed about half of some 20 complaints against Ralph’s Thriftway of Olympia. Store owners refuse to stock the morning-after pill in their pharmacy, citing moral objections. Continue reading

Having to Backpedal……Lo siento.

Sometimes I need to think lonnggerr before speaking and certainly before blogging.  Righteous indignation has its place; this may have been misdirected, as well as overdone.  Sheesh.  More on that later…..

Last night I penned off at livid email to the person in question represented ‘in the video’ as well as to the Executive Director.  Then today I talked to someone I met while I was an employee long ago at PPAI.  At that time, she was president of the board of directors for PPAI.  As a result of that conversation, I now feel totally, totally stoopid – totally. Totally.   Why it never occurred to me that, duh!, the video and the transcript more than likely were ‘doctored’ allowing for gross misreprentation of the actual conversation OR their motivation, is indeed a mystery.

The Boise Weekly had this up on their site.  As Rebecca Poedy, executive director Planned Parenthood of Idaho stated:

“It’s an extremist, anti-choice group that has manipulated a 25-minute conversation.  It’s not an accurate representation of the transcript……. It’s an all-new situation.  It’s not at all what we expected.”

Poedy said the Idaho office never accepted money from the staged call, and reported the incident to the national office immediately.

Sisphysus at 43rd State Blues has up a tremendous piece to counter the “hit piece” from the Idaho Statesman this morning who couldn’t find anyone other than Bryan Fischer of Idaho Family Values available for comment.

Although I sent a heartfelt apology via email to Ms Kersey and Ms Poedy, I still feel stupid.

Planned Parenthood of Idaho Has Some Explaining To Do

Livid – that’s the adjective befitting this story.

My fellow unruly blogsters at Les Enrages alerted me to this at Huckleberries Online; one unruly hails from Spokane. Here’s the story via the ‘Christian News Wire.

Seven-State Investigation Organized By UCLA Students Shows Evidence of Racism at Planned Parenthood

Apparently this so-called investigation was conducted over the summer of 2007. The article describing the results of that ‘investigation’ is in the Winter issue, 2008, of some small publication entitled, ‘Live Action’s The Advocate.’ It’s undoubtedly a set-up. The file loads as a PDF; the story begins on page 3.

A student magazine at UCLA, The Advocate, released phone recordings of Planned Parenthood staffers approving a donor’s racist agenda, prompting students to begin a petition to request that UCLA administrators cut programs and affiliations with Planned Parenthood. The magazine conducted a seven-state probe to ascertain how Planned Parenthood development centers would respond to a caller who expressed explicitly racist motives behind his donation.

When the actor stated in a phone conversation with an Idaho Planned Parenthood that “the less black kids out there the better,” Director of Development Autumn Kersey called his position “understandable” and indicated she was excited to process his donation. An Ohio representative, Lisa Hutton, tells the donor, when informed of his racist agenda, that Planned Parenthood “will accept the money for whatever reason.” Continue reading
