Women’s Rights are Human Rights

Moveon.org has video of a speech Hillary Clinton gave to the UN Women’s Conference in Beijing, 1995. It was brought out due to phrasing last week of “gay rights are human rights” said somewhere and the similarity to Hillary’s claim that ‘women’s rights are human rights” in 1995.

Coincidentally after viewing the video, I caught this segment on NPR’s ‘Talk of the Nation’ entitled the ‘Insidious Tradition of Taking Child Brides.’  A guest on the show was Stephanie Sinclair, a photographer, who did a photo story for National Geographic on child brides.  Ms. Sinclair has a remarkable website with various photo shoots from around the world, one of the most searing on self-immolation.

Nujood Ali is mentioned specifically by Ms. Sinclair in the interview with NPR.  Nujood was forced into a marriage at the age of 9.  Seeking a divorced at the age of 10 – she was the “first child bride in her country to demand and get a divorce.”  She has an amazing story, and she also met up with Hillary Clinton in 2008 when Ms. Clinton was honored with Glamour Magazine’s ‘Woman of the Year’ award.

Here’s another clip of Hillary Clinton in her inimitable way laying it down during questioning from Rep. Christopher Smith, (R-NJ) on reproductive rights.  As an aside, notice Rep. Smith’s reference of:  “I yield to the distinguished gentleman.”  You’ll never convince me you care about women when using language that doesn’t recognize them for who they are.

What Work Is

More on Philip Levine from the New York Times on his recent elevation to Poet Laureate, as well as from PBS’s NewsHour (below).

Instant Karma

Seems to be the overwhelming verdict regarding this:

‘Man dies while raping elderly woman.’

Two if by land….one if by land, what’s by the sea?

What is it about some who want to revel in their ignorance and stupidity like pigs in mud?

Paul Revere is remembered for his historic Midnight Ride warning colonists of the impending British Army attack. He also had an illustrious career as an engraver, silversmith, watchmaker and soldier.

Video here of American history involving Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride.

Real American history of Paul Revere.

Listen, my children, and you shall hear
Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere,
On the eighteenth of April, in Seventy-five;
Hardly a man is now alive
Who remembers that famous day and year.

He said to his friend, “If the British march
By land or sea from the town to-night,
Hang a lantern aloft in the belfry arch
Of the North Church tower as a signal light,
One, if by land, and two, if by sea;
And I on the opposite shore will be,
Ready to ride and spread the alarm
Through every Middlesex village and farm,
For the country folk to be up and to arm….

So through the night rode Paul Revere;
And so through the night went his cry of alarm
To every Middlesex village and farm,—
A cry of defiance, and not of fear,
A voice in the darkness, a knock at the door,
And a word that shall echo for evermore!
For, borne on the night-wind of the Past,
Through all our history, to the last,
In the hour of darkness and peril and need,
The people will waken and listen to hear
The hurrying hoof-beats of that steed,
And the midnight message of Paul Revere.

What IS Their Priority?

We need someone like this in the U.S.  Congress or maybe just more in the Idaho legislature….

What the Gov’t Shutdown is REALLY About

This has been my conclusion from early on and over the past few days the twitterverse has been abuzz with it as well.  Today it’s a raging bonfire of consensus.  An example:

AndrewKroll RT @CitizenRick: Yep. #Absurd RT @jaketapper: Bottom line: this is a standoff over 0.17% of the budget and funding for Planned Parenthood.

And don’t tell me this isn’t about controlling women’s reproductive choices or women – period. Because it SO is.

These fucking assholes don’t give a shit about what transpires following birth and beyond. However that conglomeration of cells that grows into a fetus has super-priority.  Of course may just pertain to white babies, that is, until they need the babies of color for news props.

BREAKING: Dems offered a “clean” bill to avert govt. shutdown and Repubs have rejected it because the bill doesn’t cut EPA & women’s rights. about 18 hours ago via web

Talking Points Memo has the scoop on ‘No Deal!’ and there’s this incredible comment:

theCleverBulldog 1 hour ago
We are 1600 billion in deficit this year alone, yet democrats insist on giving 500 million tax dollars to a private organization so they can kill babies. Truly amazing.
$500 million tax dollars . . . .
Oh, of course.

Paul Ryan’s ties to Health Insurance

Still fuming over Rep. Paul Ryan’s quote, “This isn’t a budget. This is a cause” and happened upon some actually interesting economic analysis.

During his little press conference, Ryan had invoked the name of Alice Rivlin referring to his stupidly named ‘Path to Prosperity’ as part of the Ryan-Rivlin Plan.  In seeking out something on the connection between Ms. Rivlin and Mr. Ryan there was this bit of analysis regarding Medicare vs insurance:

Whether traditional Medicare could survive as an option, in the sort of system Rivlin says she envisions, is open to question and would depend, in part, on the regulations governing the whole system. But, at least in principle, she wouldn’t force people into private insurance. The new Ryan plan would.

Just the other day someone had sent this link via Twitter tying in Paul Ryan’s bribes political donations from the “insurance industry” which at the time seemed just benign information.  Now it’s more like fodder. Continue reading

You Can’t Make Me!

Just a comment on this in The Idaho Statesman Tuesday morning edition.

Governor Butch is refusing to meet with the Idaho Press Club tomorrow, Wednesday instead sending Lt. Gov. Brad Little.  Otter’s spokesman, Jon Hanian, stated flatly, “The governor said, ‘Look, I’m not going to do it this year.’”

Idaho’s governors have met with the Idaho Press Club during the annual legislative session since the tradition began with Cecil Andrus in the early 1970s.

They did it because they honored the media’s duty to inform.

Simply put, it is the duty of the governor to make himself accessible to the people over whom he has governance, as well as to the media as a mechanism to dispensing information.  Aside from thinking Butch wouldn’t be anything more than a common drunk if he hadn’t married into the Simplot family, he still has a duty to the people of Idaho in allowing access.

“I’ve Seen Him More Times at Breakfast…”

Apparently Fox News, long known for its objectivity and incredible in-your-face reporting has ignited a ‘firestorm’ accusing CNN, Reuters, and other news outlets of participating in a government-sponsored propaganda excursion wherein they acted as human shields while covering a bombed out portion of Gaddafi’s compound in Tripoli.

As told by Nic Robertson, CNN, a good number of reporters/journalists along with photographers were on an excursion to ‘tour’ an apparent “unauthorized” target under the no-fly-zone enacted by the UN over Libya ‘sponsored’ by Libyans officials from the Ministry of Information.  Ultimately British aircraft on the verge of firing 7 Storm Shadow missiles in to the same area called off the attack once learning of the physical presence of the reporters.  Thus the accusation by Fox News of being used as human shields.
