Larry, Larry – Give it UP!

Over at TPM, there’s the latest on Mr. Diehard himself, Larry ‘Toe-Tappin’ Craig.

Larry Craig Privately Apologizing To Fellow Republicans For “Distraction”

Mr. Craig isn’t backing down or out. He has just now gone to using other than the usual methods. He’s issuing private apologies for the “distraction” of his recent arrest or as Greg Sargent puts it, “his men’s room cruising.”

His newest approach: Write an letter of apology, mail it, and enclose a copy of the paperwork filed on his plea withdrawal. ‘Roll Call’ has the goods behind their subscription wall.

“Craig sent a copy of his appeal to his fellow GOP Senators, along with a personally signed letter of regret and an offer to provide further information as his case moves ahead. The embattled Senator, who has said he intends to resign on Sept. 30 unless he is able to have his guilty plea thrown out, wrote to Senators: “I regret the distraction this situation has caused at a time when the attention of the Senate, and the nation, should be on the war and other serious policy issues.

“Nevertheless, should you be interested in the facts of my case and the efforts I am making, I encourage you to review the enclosed,” Craig continued in the brief memo. “If you would like any additional information, please don’t hesitate to contact me personally, or my office.”

You know what? It’s not convincing anyone who matters in relation to Craig’s political future. A ‘Senate GOP aide’ is attributed with stating, “The story is done. The door is closed. This is not about people not liking or liking him. This was business.”

Yep, the business just went bankrupt, Larry. But you can tell us now – is it true what they say about Mitch McConnell?

Bit of background.

Larry LaRocco and His Working ‘A Day in the Life’

Larry LaRocco is running for the senate seat currently occupied by the bathroom toe tapper himself, Larry Craig. If I remember correctly, Larry LaRocco is around my age, early 50’s – thereabouts. Nope, 61; that’s even ‘worse.’ 😉

One of the things I found rather interesting was Larry’s ‘commitment’ to work various jobs around the state. I just know at my age, I’m not looking to work at some of the jobs Mr. LaRocco has gotten himself into on this campaign. His latest was on the production line at Amalgamated Sugar in Nampa, “loading & stacking 5-lb & 10-lb bags of sugar for shipping.” (Just follow the ‘stink’, er – odor – or the trucks loaded with sugar beets.) That was yesterday. No word yet on the number of Aleve or hot soaks taken.

Larry has a diary at ‘Daily Kos’ and he wrote a letter in June explaining why he was doing his “Working for Senate” campaign in Idaho. Thus far, he’s undertaken these jobs:

All the above jobs can be read about at Larry’s website. Act Blue also has a contribution page for Larry.

Wildlife Clash – Elk versus Us

This morning’s Idaho Statesman has a blog entry about the elk population. Rocky Barber who writes,’Letters From the West‘ had this to say:

“For decades the elk population has been growing and expanding. The rash of fires over the last 20 years has increased elk habitat across the region, not reduced it.

The elk that are visiting Boise are children of this rebound. They won’t find a good home here in their historic habitat because now we are here.”

I don’t think it’s “now we are here” – we’ve been here for the last 50+ years (me) and beyond, I think it is in part due to the heavy influx of people from other parts of the country who have ‘discovered’ Idaho. They come to live, visit, and tool around the state, some of whom are totally oblivious to the habitat here. Case in point: This story overnight of a fire in the foothills off Bogus Basin Road, undoubtedly human-caused. (Traveling Hwy-55, Hwy 21, and the lesser known and traveled byways, I see folks throw lit cigarette butts out car/trunk windows too often for my comfort and without thought of the dryness of nature around them.)

Wildlife Clash

This morning a yearling elk bull calf (2-point) apparently followed the Boise River into town.

Staying in the east part of town would have been fine but when the poor thing started rambling up towards the Boise Bench, that’s when it ran into the “this is too dangerous range.”

The Idaho Statesman reports that at one point the Boise police had the elk cornered at 9th & Myrtle. 9th & Myrtle! Yikess!!! That’s major, major traffic, vehicles thundering into town via the 5-lanes of ‘The Connector.’

This is picture is of the outbound ‘Connector’ although the inbound is at the top left of the picture. It still illustrates the width and busyness of the street, and it is plenty busy. Too busy for an elk to be cantering around.boise-connector-outbound.jpg

Later it moved up to Curtis Road & Cassia and that really is getting too far into town and into heavily residential areas, along with several major roads connecting, and therein lies the increased likelihood it would connect with a vehicle, and as an elk is much larger than a deer, it would end up in someone’ s front seat after going through the windshield.

I’m not sure why a Boise police officer found it necessary to fire two shots at the elk before Fish and Game officers were able to tranquilize the animal. What is reported is that “the elk’s injuries were so severe that it had to be euthanized.” It apparently had been herded into a field to be tranquilized.

Later, there was a report of the supposed sighting of four more elk being out on Warm Springs Avenue, although Fish & Game couldn’t verify the report and couldn’t find them.
